Dear Reader,
I share here what I like and what works for me. If you've been following me, you know that I can change my mind from time to time, and feel free to comment that I'm completely wrong, you may be right. I'm not running a business. I'm not paid and have never received any compensation or facilitation for any review/brand/site here mentioned. In case one day we'll ever meet, I'll be the one offering you a cup of Italian coffee, too.

spoils of tour

First of all, welcome to my new visitors, you are a lot this week, thank you for reading and sharing this passion with me. I love your support and comments, that's what keeps blogs alive.

(UPDATE: there's a typo in the picture: design by Renata Niemczyk)

It's Wiosna time again! I'm feeling better and I've finished round 15, started round 16 and I'm confident to finish it by this week. Diameter is 31cm at the end of round 15, I'm planning to use only the white till the end. I can't wait to start the last round from Renulek, when the size grows so much, it seems that at the last/second last round it starts like an obsession to finish as soon as possible.

I bought all that fabric behind the doily last week, there's 15 squared pieces (about 55x55cm) of cotton, very cheap (only 3€ each) but that's because they was part of a set of samples, while the one with roses is cotton and viscose, and it was 10€, about the same size. They are going to be zippered pouches, I think they will be part of my xmas presents, but I like using such little bags for my tatting and everything else, and it seems they're never enough!

Actually the shopping was the side-effect of a tour.

Last week my husband, sons and I enjoyed a short holiday in Firenze, enchanting old city in the centre of Italy, overflowing with masterpieces of art, with amazing shops too! Just to mention bags, one I liked had a little price-tag and I got close to see it: oh mamma mia! It had one more zero on its price than what I thought would have been expensive! I'm also impressed by the high number of shops selling leather gloves, that's not so common to find elsewhere. The city was not so crowed despite the period but you can bump into people from everywhere in the world! People at the reception and in restaurants kept on asking things in English and I can tell you they sighed with relief when we said them 'please you may speak in Italian'! Lol! I've heard some youngest Americans chatting in groups and they were absolutely incomprehensible to me! Sigh! Confronting and dealing with a second language like me as an adult, it's really difficult. But I'd even say that sometimes I must ask my sons to repeat what they're saying, they speak so fast... Deafness symptom?

Some pictures from last week:

Cenotaph of Dante (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_Santa_Croce,_Florence)
(Dante is buried in Ravenna)
In Basilica of Santa Croce many famous Italians are buried or commemorated, among them are Galileo, Alfieri, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo, Rossini, Foscolo.
selfies in Museo del Duomo
Cabinet secrétaire in Palazzo Vecchio (Sala di Ercole)
The cabinet in that pic was decorated with charming flowers and birds and inlaid with lapis lazuli, too, I think it's from the XVIII c., I'd love having one like that, to store shuttles and threads, I'd be happy even without lapis lazuli...

Auf Wiedersehen

  1. You will have fun with the fabric and Renulek outer rounds. I know about the difficulties of second languages. I was asked recently to write a piece in Afrikaans, but it really wasn't up to standard, so you have my absolute respect for writing your blog in English!!

  3. Ciao Ninetta,
I totally understand the problem of travelling, having done a coach trip around the middle of Europe'. There was a lot of different lananguous, I know a few words of French, Germany. Italian (although I am learning more Italian as you know though the Italian group). Spanish and Hewbrew. It's when you get the regional variations that can confuse me more.
Your English is brilliant and well done for writing this blog in English.
Your doily is looking beautiful I look forward to seeing it's progress.
    Avantie,
    Arrivederci

  4. Your English is very good. Second languages are difficult because of regional dialects. I, too, have heard people speaking English that sounded like a foreign language to me, and it's MY 'first' language. :-) Your Renulek doily is lovely in ANY language. We ALL speak tatting. :-)

    1. Very kind of you Stephanie :X lol in fact tatting is chatty (chiacchierino) in italian! :D

  5. Just be back from the dictionary... I found that chatty translates with chiacchierone, but in italian grammar the suffix -one is a pejorative for the noun (somebody who talks a lot, not always a pleasure). In the case of chiacchierino, the suffix -ino is a diminutive, so that gives to the noun an emotional connection, like for example to address a kid that starts talking a lot, a pleasure to listen to.

  8. Your written English is always so good, I'm surprised. You're always so positive though, I'm sure people love to talk with you in any language. Doily-gorgeous! Sometimes I envy the people who make bags but I know if I started, I'd never stop! I love the pietà in your museo del duomo, it's so heartbreaking. And thank you for new knowledge! I love that chiaccherino means chatty(in a good way), it's fun like frivolité, English is so poor in our interpretation of "tatting".

  10. You have steam-rolled ahead with your doily :-)))) You sculpt in thread :-)
I'll be completing round 16 today but may not start the final round immediately.

I was waiting impatiently for your pics from Florence - Michelangelo has a very special place for me. I saw replicas of his la pieta, David, etc. in Rome, & even those were astounding. But to see the real sculpture - wow. All this has brought back memories of Irving Stone's intensely written book !
