Dear Reader,
I share here what I like and what works for me. If you've been following me, you know that I can change my mind from time to time, and feel free to comment that I'm completely wrong, you may be right. I'm not running a business. I'm not paid and have never received any compensation or facilitation for any review/brand/site here mentioned. In case one day we'll ever meet, I'll be the one offering you a cup of Italian coffee, too.

TREBLE TATTING STITCH - SUMMARY

Abbreviation: "tds = treble tatting stitch"
  • Start with a very small picot and one double stitch.
  • Laying the picot across the ball thread and pull up a loop of thread through the picot.
  • Then, take another loop of the ball thread and pull it through the previous loop.
  • Now slip the shuttle through the loop thus formed. Don't tighten it, yet.
  • Hold a loop of the core thread in the ring finger, then pass the shuttle from back to front, in space between core thread and loop, 3 times.
  • Tighten the ball thread and don't let the core thread slip out of place.
  • Then, pull the core thread.

IN WRITTEN PATTERNS:
Example:
ds = double stitch
tds = treble tatting stitch
vsp = very small picot
Ring: 1ds, 7tds, vsp, 1ds, close ring.

IN DIAGRAMS:

HIDDEN PICOTS:
hidden picot = a very small picot hidden between and within each tds as part of the structure.

TREBLE JOINS: “TJ = treble join”
For how to join a tds to a previous element, there are 2 methods, refer to this post by Muskaan: https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2018/07/multiples.html

IMPORTANT:
Not every pattern/element has 1ds before the first tds. It depends on the pattern, refer to this post:
https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/2019/02/jumping-in-place-starting-without-very.html
Patterns/elements don't have always another "vsp and 1ds" after the last treble. It depends on the pattern.

My very first post about treble tatting stitch is here: https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/2018/06/treble-tatting.html
Why I chose the term "treble": I chose the term "treble" because it is the closest term to my Italian "punto alto". The "ds" is the traditional stitch, then tds is the treble ds. Simple to memorise. https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/2019/02/jumping-in-place-starting-without-very.html

I taught tds at the First Italian Tatting Meeting, Hotel Crown in Rimini, Italy, May 17-19, 2019
Douglas Hill (Finger Lakes Tatters) taught tds at the Finger Lake Tatting Conference, April 5-7, 2019.
Kaye Judt taught tds at Tatting Corner Tat Days, July 11-13, 2019 (she also wrote a book containing a pattern with tds: "More O' This and Tat")

UPDATE September 2022:  Treble tatting is now part of a published book!

At the moment it is only in Italian, and available on Amazon: https://amzn.eu/d/4MlEOyX

There are three chapters: the first covers the history of tatting, mainly from an Italian viewpoint; in the second chapter there is the treble tatting (I have improved my drawings for showing how to tat the treble stitch - and there are links to my videos, easily accessible thanks to qrcodes); the third chapter contains detailed instructions, pictures and diagrams for the Swirling Butterflies doily pattern.

Many thanks to Alesandra Caputo (www.merlettoitaliano.it) to help make this book a reality.

And many thanks to Muskaan (for the many tips and improvements, beyond my requests - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/) and Paola Bevilacqua (https://www.facebook.com/legioiedipaola48), who both tested the doily pattern.

  2. Does the tattted Treble Double Stitch replicate the English Treble Crochet stitch or the American Treble Crochet stitch?

Thank you very much for all your nice comments.
