wip for a valentine

Only few words today to say that I'm playing with a new square in lilac and ecrù, thread is dmc size 80. There will be a lot of hearts this time ... I've already tatted 5 squares with 20 hearts and I'm not yet fed up!

Oggi solo due righe per dire che ho una nuova piastrellina in lilla e ecrù, solito filo dmc 80. Ci saranno un sacco di cuoricini stavolta... Ho già fatto 5 piastrelle e 20 cuoricini e ancora non mi sono stufata!

already seen somewhere?

Have you ever had that feeling of "already seen somewhere"?

That's what I think looking at my last little square. I've not
copied it, but it's a simple pattern and I'm quite sure that it
isn't original. It's a Greek cross.

I've tatted the four squares with dmc size 80, pink and a variegated dark red. The pattern looks incomplete to me, when 4 motifs are joined toghether, I'd redesign how to fill all that space. The big motif is tatted with shuttles wound with 2 threads, one is dmc 80 and the other is 2 strands of the dmc moulinè 100% polyester E3821 gold.

The same threads are used to tat the cross in the next picture, using the same pattern. If you goggle "tatted cross" you'll be mixed up by the huge amount of images, they're all similar but no one equal to another! But then, this fact is extremely encouraging and reassuring... may be, my cross could even be original... I've already framed it and now it hangs in my bedroom.

In the picture there's also my little homework, for the Tatting
Designer class, in fact we've talked about complementary colors, and I've tatted again my quad_13 patern using green and a variegated red.

Then I've picked up samples of thread I got, to try complementary combinations. I like lilac close to ecrù, I've never though to use them together, nor I knew that they are complementary.

And, ehm... sorry Teacher, is that type of chain valid for the homework?

Avete mai avuto la sensazione che quello che avete fatto non sia originale? A me questa piccola croce greca pare proprio comune, già vista da qualche parte. Comunque devo ripensare a come unire le piastrelle tra loro, rimane troppo spazio vuoto. La croce e il motivo grande sono fatti con le navette riempite con 2 tipi di filo, il dmc 80 e due capi del moulinè metallizzato E3821. Se cercate su google "tattes cross" avete tante immagini da confordervi! Sembrano uguali ma sono tutte diverse! Questo forse è quasi incoraggiante, forse la mia crocetta potrebbe essere originale... Nella stessa foto ci sta il compitino sui colori complementari, fatto per le le lezioni che sto seguendo (per info guardate il sito http://tattinghomework.wordpress.com/).Ho messo insieme un po' dei miei fili per provare varie combinazioni, mi piace il lilla con l'ecrù, non avevo mai pensato di usarli insieme e non pensavo nemmeno che fossero complementari. E poi ci sta una bella catena, chissà se è valida per l'altro compitino?

Another square has been added to the "granny square" set... I've not followed a colour scheme, I've used a  sample of the variegated Perfect Quilter, another little sample of the treasure sent by Fox, I like that colour combination but I've never thought to match those four colours toghether, you know I still have a lot to learn on colour schemes... The pattern is simple, and I squarely think it doesn't look so original, but I haven't copied it. In the center daisy, I've used the Ankars style "over" join, to force petals in their position.
 
Then I've tatted the same pattern with a thread that I've wanted to test for a while. That is the metallic silver thread Coats Anchor Ophir, a 3-ply very tiny, it's similar to a size 70 thread, it's 65% viscose and 35% polyester. I've bought it in december but I used it for the very first time in this pattern. It's cheaper than dmc, but sorry, squarely speaking, I think it's not the same outcome, it tends to break, very difficult to retro-tat (sigh, I did it!) and the result is too much stiff to me. It seems more "wire" than "metallic". One thing I like much of lace is the feeling in touch, expecially when made with a very tiny cotton thread. I'm still in love with dmc, sorry!

Un'altra piastrella aggiunta al set... Non ho seguito alcuno schema per i colori, ho usato un campione del filo variegato Perfect Quilter avanzato dal tesoretto spedito da Fox., mi piace quella combinazione ma credo che non mi sarebbe mai venuta in mente, già sapete che ho ancora molto da imparare sui colori... Lo schema è semplice, onestamente non sembra molto originale ma non l'ho copiato. Nel centro ho usato l'aggancio tipico della tecnica ANKARS, per costringere i petali nella giusta posizione. Poi ho rifatto lo stesso disegno con un filo che avevo comprato a dicembre e volevo provare da un po'. E' un filo metallizzato argento della Coats, Ophir, molto simile a un numero 70 come spessore, 65% viscosa e 35% poliestere. Provato per la prima volta con questo schema, sinceramente mi ha fatto rimpiangere il dmc, anche se costa meno, ma tende a rompersi, è molto difficile tornare indietro slegando i nodi (fatto, sigh!) e il risultato è troppo rigido per me. Sembra quasi più metallo che metallico! Una cosa che mi piace del merletto è la sensazione sotto le dita, specialmente quando è fatto con filo sottile di cotone. Scusate ma sono ancora innamorata del dmc!

Recently I've bought 3 new books, one old publication featured here  and 2 new books. This week I've been tatting some patterns from Marilee Rockley's last book and you can see two of them tatted by me. There're very beautiful patterns, for a long time of tatting fun. I followed her instructions that are very clear and squarely explained, step by step. I've used two threads wound toghether, one 100% pure silk (seta Faro) and DMC n.282 gold metallic thread.

Recentemente ho comprato 3 libricini di chiacchierino, una vecchia pubblicazione di cui si parla in questo articolo, e 2 nuove edizioni. Questa settimana ho provato a rifare alcuni schemi dell'ultimo libro di Marilee Rockley e potete vedere 2 foto di orecchini fatti da me seguendo i suoi schemi. Ce ne sono molti veramente carini, da passarci ore di divertimento. Sono tutti spiegati molto chiaramente, con molte foto per far vedere il procedimento passo-passo. Ho usato per entrambi 2 fili avvolti insieme, una seta Faro e il DMC n.282 metallizzato.

I finished the doily "under construction", and that's the result. I thought it'd needed another round, but now I like it as it is. I've ironed it, not blocked, so there're some long picots still twisted, not so bad anyway. Thread is DMC 80, in red and grey, and pattern is mainly SRs of 3-3/3-3. Flowers are SRs in the center, and simple rings create the flowery illusion. Here is another photo taken before attaching them to the center daisy:

Ho finito il centrino "in costruzione" e questo è il risultato. Pensavo che servisse un'altro giro, ma adesso mi piace così com'è. L'ho stirato, non bloccato con gli spilli, quindi qualche picot non è ben steso, non male, dopotutto. Il filo è il solito DMC n.80, in rosso e grigio, lo schema è principalmente fatto con tutti split ring con pippiolini separati da 3 nodi ciascuno. I fiorellini sono split ring al centro e semplici anelli creano l'illusione floreale. La seconda foto l'ho scattata prima di attaccare tutti i fiorellini alla margherita centrale.

missing wishes

 I've been outside home, visiting relatives and eating a lot! I missed you tatters, I missed to send you, in time, my best wishes for this new year. Holiday time disappeared and all those little balls in the pictures did the same: they've been given as gifts.
Sono stata a trovare parenti e a mangiare un sacco! Mi siete mancate, e non ho mandato al momento giusto nemmeno gli auguri per il nuovo anno. Il tempo è volato, così come le palline della foto, regalate durante le feste.

Some others are still hanging on my tree, but only for few hours more, because I'm going to store all up till next year.
Alcune sono ancora appese al mio alberello, per poco, visto che tra qualche ora metterò tutto via per il prossimo anno.

I've made over 20 of them, with some tatting I had put on my "hidden box", where I use to put all tatting for which I couldn't decide a destination, or test tatting, or not "perfect" pieces. Sometimes, I forget where was the bad spot and rescue the little boy. That was the case for a lot of them, transformed in balls within a week before Christmas.

Ne ho fatte più di 20, con campioncini che avevo da parte nella mia scatolina, dove di solito metto ciò che faccio senza un particolare motivo o delle prove oppure qualcosa che non mi sembra "perfetto". A volte mi dimentico dove sta lo sbaglio e recupero "il giovanotto". E' successo così per molti campioncini, trasformati in palline giusto una settimana prima di Natale.

Desiderare deriva dal Latino "sentire la mancanza di...". Vi auguro di realizzare tutti i vostri desideri, se nella vostra vita sentite la mancanza di qualcosa, ma vi auguro anche di trovare qualcosa di inaspettato e meraviglioso, come i Magi che cercavano un re e invece hanno trovato Dio.

Tattingram...Uh?!? What is it?

Justified! Any of you who didn't guess is officially justified. A "tattingram" is a tangram made with tatted pieces. With 7 simple shapes you can play for ages! There're two principal distinctions: only rotations and rotations plus flipping the parallelogram over. With this tatting pattern, only rotations are permitted. I needed to add two joining picots to basic shapes to obtain the candle.

Warning: to be used only under childish supervision!

Giustificati! Tutti quelli che non hanno indovinato sono giustificati! Un "tattingram" è il tangram fatto col chiacchierino (scusate, ma proprio non mi suonava bene "chiacchiogram" o "frivogram"!!!)  Con 7 figure di base si può giocare per ore! Ci sono due movimenti principali: solo rotazioni e rotazioni più il capovolgimento del solo parallelogramma. Con questo schema, si possono fare bene solo rotazioni. Ho dovuto aggiungere un paio di picot di unione per ottenere la candela.

Attenzione: da usarsi solo sotto la supervisione di un bambino!

Pretty clear. Or not?

Here's a list of clues:

• it could be a toy, for tatters - obviously ;
• it could be appreciated by teachers, math kind of tatting teachers;
• it could be framed or quilted, it's not 3D tatting;
• there will be 2 more pieces only.

Anyway, I think it's pretty clear, now. Or not?

• potrebbe essere un giochino, per chiacchierine - ovviamente;
• potrebbe essere apprezzato dagli insegnanti, specie quelli di chiacchierino con inclinazioni matematiche;
• potrebbe essere incorniciato o cucito, non è in 3D;
• ci saranno solo altri due pezzetti.

Coimunque, mi sembra abbastanza chiaro adesso. O no?

Xmas butterflies? Not in Italy...

I'm using 2 shuttles filled both with DMC Spécial Dentelles Size 80, color numbers are 701 green and 666 red. Both threads are coupled with a strand of Gutermann metallic thread (that's 70% polyammid and 30% polyester). Unfortunately, they only sell 50meters spools, so I needed to buy a second one to continue my funny xmas job.

Butterflies are not a traditional subject for Christmas ornaments, so, even if I love them a lot, I've to forget it now. Any other guess?

Sto usando 2 navette di filo DMC Spécial Dentelles numero 80, colori 701 verde and 666 rosso. Entrambi i fili sono accoppiati col filo metallico della Gutermann (che è 70% poliammide e 30% poliestere). Sfortunatamente lo vendono in rocchetti da 50m, così ho dovuto comprare un secondo rocchetto per continuare il mio giochetto natalizio.

Le farfalle, si sa, non sono esattamente roba da mettere sotto l'albero, perciò, anche se le adoro, per ora le devo lasciar perdere. Qualche altra idea?

Guess what?

Partially solved the tingling problem, I cannot resist to start a new project. Do you remember? I know that there are at least 3 projects "in fieri", which need my attention to be completed (the squares, the doily under construction and a necklace for a friend); but then I've started a beading project (that should be a xmas present) and GUESS WHAT?

I've started another tatting project, we may call it a breeze... But I'm not going to tell you what it is, I only say that it could rather be another square, but it isn't, and I'm going to make a second shape joined to it.

This new project was the opportunity to refresh two techniques well explained - as usual - by Jane Eborall: one is "Starting Rings, Chains, Split Rings and Self Closing Mock Rings Without Tying Knots", and the other is "Joining last Ring to First Ring". Please, you should visit Jane's tatting blog, I like her a lot!

More on this motif is that I'm using a lot the magic thread trick to hide ends, it seems that I finally understood quite well this method and I use it almost regularly.

I've always been a multitasking kind of tatter, expecially when, almost at the end of a motif, I discover a flaw in the middle and I can't be still focused on the project... For example, the yellow doily in the picture above started to cup, then I decided for the pointed elements, but during the third point, a light turned on and that was how this tree arised:

Indovinate un po': parzialmente risolto il problema dell'intorpidimento alle mani, ho iniziato un altro progetto. Vi ricordate? C'erano in ballo le piastrelle, un centrino e una collana per un'amica, adesso ho iniziato anche un lavoretto con le perline (che dovrebbe essere un regalo di Natale, ma chissà?) e un'altra cosa a chiacchierino, che chiameremo "il giochetto"... Non ho intenzione di dirvi niente per ora, solo che potrebbe essere un'altra piastrella, ma anche no, e che sto per unirla a un altro motivo... Comunque è stata una buona opportunità per ripassare 2 tecniche che trovate tra le pagine di Jane Eborall: come cominciare con due fili senza fare nodi e come chiudere un fiorellino evitando di arrotolare l'ultimo picot di unione. Andate a vedere il suo blog, a me piace tantissimo! Un'altra cosa a proposito di questo nuovo progetto è che sto usando abbastanza il metodo del "filo magico" - o come si chiama - per nascondere i capi finali , invece che con l'ago. A quanto pare finalmente l'ho digerito bene e lo uso quasi sempre. 
Non è la prima volta che inizio tanti lavori contemporaneamente, specialmente se mi accorgo di un errore non rimediabile nel bel mezzo di un centrino. Procedo, ma non sono più concentrata sul lavoro che faccio. Per esempio, mentre facevo quel centrino giallo, il lavoro ha cominciato ad accoppare, per rimediare ho pensato di fare le punte. Mentre facevo la terza punta, mi si è accesa una lucetta ed è nato quel piccolo alberello che trovate su flickr.

About threads, trials, errors and perfectionism

My favourite thread is DMC size 80, you already know that. I feel comfortable with  it, I just know how much ds I need within one centimeter, how much thread is needed for a 10ds ring, just in a sight. No matter if I've started to take off glasses (myopic - I'm short-sighted, urgh!) or if I've started to dislike red and black, especially when retro-tatting.
Dmc size 80 was the thread used for the sheet in that photo, formerly posted on a facebook's page. I tatted it in 1996, if I can remember well, tatting 2-3 hours per day for three months. For a chance - as it's never happened again - it was showed in public a few years later, during an exposition of old 1950's farmer houses, put into a hand made wooden crib.

I was there a Sunday afternoon, just near my tatting work, when a couple passed right the crib and she said: "What a shame! Why they put an industrial lace in this beautiful handmade crib??" I remained speachless, couldn't say a sigh! I've so neat in my memory, till now, how much care I put in it, I couldn't have ever imagined it would have been looked as a machine made lace.

I'll go on doing my best for each single stitch, after all these years I've learned how to retro-tat instead of cutting, and the experience makes the rest, besides a little help from my favourite thread... But I'm far from a perfectionist, (maybe I should show you) I've a box where I put all trials and motifs with flaws which - who knows? - could be useful a day to come... 

Il mio filo preferito, si sa, è il dmc 80, già so come mi devo regolare sia come quantità di filo sia quanti sono i nodini da fare in un cm, basta un'occhiata. Non importa se ho già cominciato a levare gli occhiali - sono miope - per vedere meglio da vicino e se comincio a non sopportare il rosso e il nero, specie se devo scucire... Lo stesso filo lo avevo usato, forse era il 96, per fare il lenzuolino della foto, precedentemente postata su FB. L'ho fatta in 3 mesi, lavorando 2-3 ore al giorno, con molta cura. Per caso, insolitamente, me l'hanno chiesta per esporla durante una mostra di cultura contadina, in case arredate stile anni '50. Me l'hanno messa in una culletta di legno fatta a mano. Mi trovavo lì accanto una domenica, quando passa una coppia e lei dice: Che peccato! Perchè hanno messo un merletto industriale in una così bella culla?? Sono rimasta senza parole, non avrei mai immaginato che potesse sembrare fatto a macchina! Beh, cerco di fare sempre il meglio che posso, ho imparato a tornare indietro invece di tagliare, e l'esperienza fa il resto, insieme al mio filo preferito... Ma di certo non sono una perfezionista, non sapete quanti pezzettini difettati e provette mi sono conservata (forse ve le dovrei far vedere)! Potrebbero tornarmi utili un giorno, chi lo sa?

surprising softness

That is the same wreath tatted by Fox (this post), I was surprised and captured by the clever use of a lock stitch around the JK, that mantains the chain shape rounded. Wow, there's always something to learn, thank you Fox, I'm really happy! And thanks to LaRae Mikulecky who has shared the pattern. I've found the pattern here.

Thread: A friend has given me a sewing thread to be tested with tatting.

I tryed first that thread alone, but it is too much elastic and too much thin.

Then I wounded toghether 2 threads, one is my usual DMC n. 80, that's 100% cotton, the other is that sewing thread, Gutermann, that's 70% polyammid and 30% polyester. The polyammid gives a lot of softness to the work, so the result has been surprising because I was wrongly convinced that it would had come stiff. But polyammid is like nylon, very soft. Then, the test showed that probably I can't use this thread combination for jewels (for ex earrings, that need to be stiff) but it's perfect to make some Christmas' ornaments.

Questa ghirlandina è la stessa fatta da Fox qualche giorno fa (questo post), sono stata sorpresa e catturata dal quel modo di lavorare i pippiolini Giuseppina, infatti notate che l'arco non perde la sua naturale curvatura! Wow, ci sta sempre qualcosa da imparare, grazie Fox, è bellissimo! E grazie a LaRae Mikulecky che ha condiviso lo schema, l'ho trovato a questo link.

Filato: Un'amica mi ha dato da provare col chiacchierino un filo metallizzato per cucire.

Prima l'ho provato da solo, ma è troppo elastico e troppo fino.

Poi l'ho avvolto insieme al mio solito DMC n.80, 100% cotone. Questo filo da cucire è composto al 70% da poliammide, che, con mia sorpresa, dà molta morbidezza al risultato finale, perchè ero convinta, sbagliando, che avrei ottenuto un risultato rigido. Ma il poliammide dopotutto è come il nylon, molto morbido. Così il test ha dimostrato che probabilmente non posso usare questo filo per fare gioellini (per es. gli orecchini devono rimanere un po' rigidi) ma è perfetto per ninnoli natalizi!!

what is going to ...?

As Christmas time is coming, I switched to a traditional colour combination that I like a lot, in fact DMC named these two xmas red and xmas green... But, what it's going to be? In the meantime, as with cold weather I start to suffer of tingling in hands, all my tatting go slower, and I don't know what is going to happen in a month, if I could finish the doily "under construction" or if I'll have time to test-tat two tiles already drawn. It's better to do one thing at a time, can I ever do it? Barbara wrote in her blog: " A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step". Also a long edging must start with a single knot...

Con Natale alle porte, sono passata a colori tradizionali, infatti DMC li chiama rosso natalizio e verde natalizio... Ma cosa sarà? Nel frattempo, visto che con i primi freddi comincio a soffrire di formicolio alle mani, tutti i miei lavoretti vanno a rilento, non so cosa succederà questo mese, se riuscirò a finire il centrino "in costruzione" o se avrò tempo di provare altre due piastrelline che ho già disegnato... E' meglio fare una cosa alla volta, ne sarò capace? Barbara  ha scritto così nel suo blog: "Un viaggio di mille miglia inizia con un solo passo". Anche un lungo bordino inizia con un solo nodo...
