Dear Reader,
I share here what I like and what works for me. If you've been following me, you know that I can change my mind from time to time, and feel free to comment that I'm completely wrong, you may be right. I'm not running a business. I'm not paid and have never received any compensation or facilitation for any review/brand/site here mentioned. In case one day we'll ever meet, I'll be the one offering you a cup of Italian coffee, too.

roundup 1 - stars and snowflakes for tatme dec2022

Yes, you read that right: 2022. I'm a little late, aren't I?

In December 2022 we had our first “Tat Me” game in the Facebook Endrucks group.

Our idea was to indulge in the seasonal tatting (typically stars and snowflakes), but also spice up the game by including a tatting contest. We liked the formula a lot, so much so that we repeated it in December 2023, but I'll tell you about it in a future post. Now, back to December 2022.

The “Tat Me” Game consists of tatting from a given set of patterns, and whosoever tats the most number of models wins the right to have their models as the cover-pic of our group for one week.

The Game started on 28th November 2022 and ended on 22nd December 2022, and the winner won the cover-pic of our group from 24th to 31st December. This is the link to the Facebook post with the announcement - https://www.facebook.com/share/p/fx9YGYw3T4RXLPZe/

Here are the snowflakes and stars patterns we chose for the TatMe Dec2022 game:

1- “Tat me snowflake” - Pattern derived from the “Pretty Me Coaster” designed by me for the Pretty Me Game (Aug 2022) - an adaptation of the heart designed by Muskaan and derived from Endrucks’ pattern E3; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZENvdgxihM0YI3Ar_UxP9lqRwprmFotP/view

2- “Little Stars and Snowflakes” - Patterns derived from Endrucks’ pattern E12 by Krystyna Mura - each star or snowflake consists of one round where one basic pointed motif is repeated 5 or 6 times; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D9n0yMmq50bO5PAf7883R7qJ_xR-agHT/view

3- “Celtic Stars and Snowflakes” - Celtic patterns derived from Endrucks’ pattern E12 by Krystyna Mura - based on the same pointed motif as the previous “Little Stars and Snowflakes” - in this variant each celtic motif consists of two interlaced “Little” stars/snowflakes; https://drive.google.com/file/d/129sfHkcR-MIhZniq6T-_Zh5BAcnJUqOw/view

4- "Filigree Stars and Snowflakes" - Patterns derived from Endrucks’ pattern E12 by Krystyna Mura - based on the same pointed motif as the previous “Little Stars and Snowflakes” - in this variant each star/snowflake consists of two rounds worked continuously, from the outer round toward the inner round (split chains involved); https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o_qb8Z1CkHq_nOQ-90k_QWpnhrRb0V_d/view

Many Thanks to Krystyna and to Muskaan for their contribution to the game.

In this post and in the next there are collage pics of a flurry of stars and snowflakes sent by members of the group, listed alphabetically. I invite you to visit the Facebook album where all models are compiled (there are more than 100 pictures) - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.850439426182885&type=3

Among participants there are tatters who posted only once in the group. We appreciate the participation of each and every tatter, and hope that some of them will return to play with us in our future games.

In a successive third post I’ll show you my tatting and some stepwise pics I took for the game.

-------------------------------------------------

1. Adriana Tomanin - She found the “Little Stars and Snowflakes” was the easiest pattern in the game. That makes her a good tatter indeed, because I think this pattern asks for a regular tension, which cannot be taken for granted by tatters on their first try.

2. Anita Schaeder - She thinks the “Tat me snowflake” is a very interesting pattern and a joy to tat! Thank you! She shared her version with 5 repetitions of the heart designed by Muskaan, which makes it similar to the “Pretty Me Coaster”. Also, she tatted one “Little Star”, using DMC size 20. Then, she felt her model from the “Celtic Stars and Snowflakes” was a bit empty in the center, so she added a simple flower (where rings are 3ds and chains 6ds); The “Celtic” and the “Filigree” are tatted with Mölnlycke cotton thread size 20, yellow and light brown, and Lizbeth size 20 "Autumn Spice".

3. Anna Bertini - She called them “Le mie stelline” (my little stars), sent her heartfelt thanks to Muskaan and me and complains that her arthritis doesn't allow her to make nice tatting anymore. A big thank you for your participation, we really appreciated it.

4. Anna Bonelli - She posts often in our group, being a good tatter who can pass smoothly from shuttle to needle. Can you say what she used here? I forgot to ask her…

5. Anna Tedesco - Copying here a comment by Muskaan: “I am sure Krystyna had You in mind when she made multiples 🤣”!!! Actually, I think she hid another bunch of stars and snowflakes, but we had to be strict and counted only the pics she sent! For her own admission of guilt: “I spend more time photographing them than making them!” (We should ask Daniela Galli, if she confided her total count to her pal!)

6. Antonia Lai - She kindly arranged all her models in a short video, wishing “Merry Christmas from Down Under” (she is Australian).

7. Antonietta Gazzaneo - She enjoyed so much all models tatted by others, that she wanted to have a part in the fun, even with only two models!

8. Cristina Reb - In the Filigree Star she added a top picot, ready to be hung as a Christmas decoration! Great idea!

9. Daniela Bogacka - She participated tatting the “Pretty Me Coaster”, but I think it is a nice star for the Game, isn’t it?

10. Daniela Galli - I'm pretty sure there were some more snowflakes under Daniela's cups, but these are what she showed us. To date, her ice drop model is one of only two actually tatted for the Endrucks 1920 Project.

11. Debra Fitchen Cox - She uses her favourite Aunt Lydia size 10 thread. She called her “Celtic” snowflake “Charlie Brown snowflake”! Very funny! She is so kind to thank the group and the admins on every game she participates, for giving her the opportunity to learn: “So enjoying this adventure thank you for being accepting of my attempts.

12. Ellen Stevenson - She tatted three “Little Stars and Snowflakes”. Sportingly, she wrote “Thank you for the project - challenging but enjoying.” Thank you for participating!

13. Irma Noemí Figueroa - She was creative, adding beads and tatted motif as an alternative inner round for the “Celtic Star” pattern. She also tatted a Dream Catcher variation of the “Little Stars and Snowflakes” pattern.

14. Julie Myers - She wrote: “I am a bit late, but I have been doing things for other people. Better late than never.” Julie, nobody is ever late for our Games!
She is the same tatter who designed one of the two pumpkins we have used for the VegPatch game this month (the pattern is listed in the Foliage directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EIgPKHH9V2Dg4gDZNefVfSVNRZQC6LbSfhiaWA_s-G8/view ) -

NOTE - If you like taking inspiration from the current or past games, these are collected in a separate document, just choose one and start! - EP Events: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZiNdE53cvqj2cLlxVP-wlga8aocPtzs5/view

15. Kaylyn Beattie - She used Lizbeth Metallic in Gemstone colour. She said it was a fun pattern! And also found she needs to work on her tension a bit. I think she did a great job.

... to be continued.

cover doilies roundup 1

In January 2023 we had our first Tat-Along in the Fb Endrucks group.

Endrucks’s 1920 book, ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’, has 44 patterns including a triangular doily on the cover. In 2021 Reiko Akamatsu had already rewritten and diagrammed the cover doily pattern, although she modified and split it into many separate motifs. This is the link to the pattern reworked by Reiko - https://drive.google.com/file/d/10KQwPg8fa4cy5l6P6bt3PIYg7H6GWfVc/view

In spite of the appealing idea to follow the original pattern, worked in one pass, Muskaan and I hadn’t time to write, diagram and prepare it for the TAL (I’ll talk about it in a future post).

So, we organized the game in this way: starting from Reiko’s pdf, during the month we shared small portions or rounds at a time and shared pictures, notes and tips for each part at regular intervals. We shared a total of 6 parts:

PART 1 – Rounds A,B,C - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1do3M5OXpn-c6Virwg5mpttgQPDPv9ZUa/view
PART 2 – Rounds D,E - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CPodHnaEo055lHB9WmDDWpmngqGuuSGG/view
PART 3 – Round F 1st part - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1F4iIFF366leCRcg3wtmhgtIz5V--Qth2/view
PART 4 – Round F 2nd part - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p39cFTI-2zzxWS66Tv1spsS574Xrr4HE/view
PART 5 – Motif G - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1km6Fy-tS-1o5LRW2TMI-KFb3KWlzRiCp/view
PART 6 – Motif H & joining Motif G/Finishing - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ioOVa8DMUN6BHIVzmSvWH9YtGN1T5PMj/view

Reiko’s pattern with multiple parts turned out to have many advantages, including the possibility of playing very well with colours, and tatters of any level enjoyed working smaller pieces with less fear of mistakes.

In this post and in the next there are pics of the doilies finished by members of the group, listed alphabetically. In a successive third post I’ll show you the WIPs sent in.

-------------------------------------------------

1. Adriana Tomanin - Joined us with enthusiasm, and she found the doily was not easy despite being a very good tatter

2. Anna Bonelli - She’s another good tatter who admitted to have had some problems in the working, but she overcame difficulties resorting to both shuttle and needle, which she masters smoothly.

Anna Bonelli even created a derivative model, a basket full of flowers (you can find it in the directory: “Baskets from Endrucks” - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v2hfFk2Nhg3ZpqUSW9vRCV_0AmQYp4qOx7gs3uJEr-g/view  )

3. Anna Tedesco - She tatted 3 doilies!! After the first one she wrote “Questo centrino è davvero difficile da realizzare.” (This doily is really difficult to make). I forgot to ask her if she changed her mind after her third!

4. Antonia Lai  - She tatted 2 doilies, one of which she called her “learning piece” (the dark blue, cream, variegated powder blue & white), but I think both doilies look very beautifully tatted!

5. Beata Sumowska - She shared with us her thoughts that Reiko’s pattern is well developed. We’re very happy that she mentioned it, so we have the excuse to thank Reiko one more time!

6. Brookie Heightsmen - She decided to change the outer contour and said it was her “own touches”.

7. Debra Fitchen Cox - Very kind of her thanking the group and the admins for giving her the opportunity to learn. Debra, I should confess that also we admin learn something more every time we prepare new instruction and diagrams!

8. Dorota Siew - She thought she was late for the game, because she posted her finished doily in April. Absolutely she wasn’t late! And we welcome new participants at any time!

NOTE - If you like taking inspiration from the current or past games, these are now collected in a separate document, just choose one and start! - EP Events: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZiNdE53cvqj2cLlxVP-wlga8aocPtzs5/view

9. Inga Madsen - She’s a pioneer in tatting and redrawing E’s cover doily, in fact she tatted and diagrammed it in summer 2022, and her work is in the “Orkis Bladet Nr. 76 - Summer 2022” publication of the Danish Tatting Association (but she shared it with us during the TAL and so I included it in this roundup!)

10. Kseniia Pavlyna - About the colours she used, here is what she wrote: “There was how I could see Bavaria region in Germany after our reallocation from Kyiv in Ukraine to Munich due to war conditions. After start of this project I realized that it was exactly 100 after creation the pattern and this author was originally from German (I was also born in Dresden, Germany before my parents moved back to Ukraine) - such tatting of the life”

Note that she also tatted the edging E6 as a frame.

11. Liliana Tosini - She very nicely thanked us for the continuous encouragement we give to the group. Thank you back for participating and for never being discouraged!

... to be continued. Ciao, Ninetta

where tatting is still art

I've been absent from the blogsphere for many months now and sorry I'm still at large. If it weren’t for Endrucks this blog would have been silent. Instead, I've been very active on Facebook. During the years, on Facebook I’ve met many lovely tatters, virtual faces that sometimes have become real acquaintances and we've even met in real life. Not yet with one of them: I still haven't had the pleasure to meet Anna Tedesco in person, but I really would like to.

A long necklace with single shuttle split rings, tatted by Anna in 2020.

All the pictures in this blogpost have been poached off her page by me, I confess my crime. But Muskaan and I wanted to give her a surprise, with this post, to express our gratitude for her constant help in the Endrucks 1920 Project. Anna, I hope you’ll forgive us for not asking your permission in advance.

In fact, inspite of not being among the “official” list of volunteers for the patterns, she worked behind the scene enthusiastically and promptly helping us on many occasions. She was also the one to coin the terms "Endrucks' children and grandchildren" for derivative patterns and derivatives of derivatives, when she made these bracelets!

Anna’s bracelets inspired by Paola Bevilacqua’s brooch, derived from Endrucks’ pattern n.18a (pic already shared by Muskaan in one of her blogposts)

Anna is an expert and excellent long-standing tatter. She collaborates as admin in the Italian group “Chiacchierino: filo, amore e fantasia” and leads her own page and group, both named "Tatting art". I've been following her personal profile too, where she usually posts great pictures of her region. She lives a little far from me, in Calabria, that is known for the many natural and art sites (seaside, parks, archeological sites, museums). Also, she likes flowers and cats, and these are often the main stars of her personal posts.

This pattern is from the 4th issue of “Mani di Fata” (1973). I couldn’t find when Anna tatted this piece of art, she writes “many years ago”.

This is her fb page: “Tatting art” https://www.facebook.com/annatedesco2018/
And this is the group linked to her page:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/898495776900356

bracelet and necklace with interlocking split rings, tatted by Anna in early 2022.

It was very difficult to choose pics from her vast repertoire. Hence I encourage you to visit her page, where there is all her Art of Tatting: from old doilies to the latest earring. Anna, just like me and many other tatters, has started learning new techniques since the internet era. She usually says that she cannot design, that she needs patterns. But I think that she has put her personal touch everywhere, making each model unique. And she is a very prolific, highly appreciated tatted jewellery maker!

Hearts tatted by Anna in 2021.

I remember when she tatted the n.28 doily, actually many of them! Because for Anna one is not enough! When she finds a pattern or a subject that she likes, she can’t stop herself with merely 2 or 3 models!

And these are some of her Endrucks’ models!

She was my right-hand for the Italian translation for Endrucks' Preface. I trust her plain and dry style (reflection of her real-life job as an engineer). She is also very pragmatic and I remember that her help was decisive for setting the slant of the translation.
This is the direct link to the Italian Eleonore Endrucks’ Preface and Tips, based on the English translation done by Simone Beyer:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/17R1LYneE2KDTWVOTjzv4yfsQ6oPizR8t/view

In 2019 she volunteered teaching her art to 2 dozen people: then she shared beautiful and promising pictures of her crowded tatting class: we started to call her "our Italian Tatyana"! (from the Russian master designer/tatter Tatyana Buyvolova who frequently shares photos of tatting by her young students on FB). In 2021 she repeated the experience and we wish her to come back to teaching soon!!

I have already introduced Anna in my blog, here:

And Muskaan wrote about Anna’s work related to Endrucks at least in 2 blogposts:
