The first thing that I learnt is that very few designers have used block tatting in snowflakes, and you can count on one hand those who posted for free.
The second thing that I learnt (actually I confirmed my view) is that block tatting is an advanced technique. You always need to tweak it a bit, depending on the pattern, whether you are literally following designer's instructions or whether you want to tat it in the way 'you think' it's better for you.
This is the updated list of free online snowflakes that I've found till now:

Those with the (***) are two patterns where Jane Eborall uses the "new to me" technique of block tatting done with lock stitches chains, she has a technique page here:

That is very intriguing, for sure I want to try it soon. Every Jane Eborall's pattern is an enjoyable learning experience, I'd rather say E-learning 😉!

Ciao,
Ninetta
Such wonderful snowflakes!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by your adventure and learning lots with you. Perhaps designers shy away from using block tatting in snowflakes because you need to mount the lace on material for the design to keep it's shape. I like your idea of mounting the snowflakes on materials in rings. Pretty enough to use throughout the year!
ReplyDeleteWell don't know how to answer you about their shape: not all but some of them are good, as any other tatted piece. The material I've used is wood, coloured with acrylics. They're going to be given away, xmas gifts for friends :X
DeleteVery nicely done, Ninetta! I agree. There aren't many free block tatted snowflakes. And, I agree, tweaking the stitch count is often needed when I block tat. We may have to create a couple patterns won't we:)
ReplyDelete:)) 😉 yes, someone should make up for it!
DeleteI agree that block tatting takes a bit of concentration and tweaking. I love the way you are mounting your tatting! Do you have a source for the materials and/or a tutorial? I dislike stiffening my tatting, but I think I would enjoy displaying snowflakes as you have.
ReplyDeleteDear Diane, sorry I didn't follow a tutorial online, not the first time I did that though. The starting material are wooden shapes and I paint them with acrylic colours both sides and let it dry well. After colouring, the golden cord has been bought at the local haberdassery and glued with white vinyl. Hope it is clear 🥰
DeleteAlso, the tatting has been glued with the white vinyl, it becomes transparent after it dries and doesn't get yellow with years. I used the same method for framing my little trees in 2011 and they are still perfect, here one example: https://flic.kr/p/aCTYYa
DeleteFabulous snowflakes and beautifully tatted with the block tatting
ReplyDeletewell done
