I found this cute angel in Pinterest, a picture with numbers on it, I could not resist tatting it, it's so lovely!

Designed by Patrizia Pirocca. My first version has been tatted with a size 70 thread:

... the necklace with O-Beads. I still have some left. The pattern is the same as the bracelet, in the middle I tatted a ring 4ds, join to the previous OB, 4ds. With the second shuttle I tatted a floating ring 4ds, OB, 4ds. In the same place, on the way back, I tatted a chain of 4ds. That is the same way I tatted corners in the earrings. The earrings are tatted from outside to inside, that is I tatted the outer round first. Maybe they would have been nice without the centre, too.

This little motif is my first attempt to replicate the rose motif at page 15 of Priscilla Tatting #3.

At page 14 there's a large "Centrepiece in knot stitch tatting" (Figure 48), in which they propose a stitch (different from first or second half of a ds) made with the working shuttle over the thread around the hand, that mimics the ds and can be also used in place of a split chain (when you join to the right with core thread leaving a space of bare thread and go back tatting over that narrow space). In my opinion it is faster than tatting a split chain, once you get the hang of it. But it needs exercise, and my first sample is not as regular as the sample in the book. It took me a ridiculous amount of time! For the centrepiece, you would tat 109 roses and 162 leaves! Tatting all those motifs can take a lifetime! But for sure I'll tat a second one, it's lovely, isn't it?

That's not that! That's just my doodle, let me say, transformed in tatting... All knotted and curled! Just my "light-ANKARS" style! I find very difficult designing a pure ANKARS motif, hat off to those talented tatters who can!

That is the back side:

I've used 2 shuttles filled with 3 threads, one size 80 cotton Lizbeth col.122 and  2 strands of metallic gold DMC E677 - and loaded seed beads. Then I sewed swarovski beads on, with an invisible sewing thread 100% polyamid.

Threads loaded for the pink version are cotton DMC size 80 col.3778 and one strand of mouliné DMC E677.

timeless rings and chains

Funny break between one project and another.

I've bought a little packet of O-beads, without any idea how to use them. Then the other day I came to this: a timeless pattern with only rings and chains.

OB = O-Bead 4mm
CWJ = Catherine Wheel Join
vsp = very small picot
Thread: I've used metallic gold DMC 282, that is like a size 70 thread.

Load CTM 2 shuttles, beads aren't loaded on shuttles but joined with a normal upper join.

Start with a ring: 4ds, OB, 4ds, vsp, 4ds, OB, 4ds.

 (*) Chain 12ds ; Ring: 4ds, normal join to previous bead, 4ds, vsp, 4ds, OB, 4ds.
Repeat from (*) for your desidered lenght.
Turning for the second part: Chain 12ds; CWJ  to last bead; Ring with SH2: 10ds; CWJ  to the same last bead;
Second side: (**) Chain 12ds ; lock join to the vsp of the ring below.  Repeat for all the length.
The opposite end is the same as the turning side. Finish with a chain tied at the base of the very first ring.

This bracelet actually has already one matching earring, I'm doing the second and I'll show you soon.

Adjective "wide" not (yet) referring to that doily!! But you should make those picots out, don't you? That is called - as I just discovered - "wide or lochness monster picot". They are great to be gripped by curled rings!

I like this second one, the loop is hidden inside all ds under the wide picot, just to my liking.

This is going to be a long lasting round... just letting my mathematical soul come to light, if I tatted 3 repetition each evening, I would finish in 13 days. That's unlikely to happen, as I've two other "things" on the go, plus another week out, visiting relatives and friends. So I'm resigned, this year "spring" ends in September! Nice to think about it, refreshing thought, with outside temperatures higher than 30C°!

That was the situation on Wednesday: 5 repetition. Two days after only 3 repetition more:

I've also started sewing my zippered pouches and tatting a collar for a friend, in thick thread for one of her traditional costumes - handmade by her -, this time she needs one meter and half for September. Pattern is from "Frivolitky" by Milena Tomkova:

There's a couple of drawings in my notebook that call me back to the designing mood, but they must wait, for the moment, at least till the end of this long lasting Spring2016.

First of all, welcome to my new visitors, you are a lot this week, thank you for reading and sharing this passion with me. I love your support and comments, that's what keeps blogs alive.

It's Wiosna time again! I'm feeling better and I've finished round 15, started round 16 and I'm confident to finish it by this week. Diameter is 31cm at the end of round 15, I'm planning to use only the white till the end. I can't wait to start the last round from Renulek, when the size grows so much, it seems that at the last/second last round it starts like an obsession to finish as soon as possible.

I bought all that fabric behind the doily last week, there's 15 squared pieces (about 55x55cm) of cotton, very cheap (only 3€ each) but that's because they was part of a set of samples, while the one with roses is cotton and viscose, and it was 10€, about the same size. They are going to be zippered pouches, I think they will be part of my xmas presents, but I like using such little bags for my tatting and everything else, and it seems they're never enough!

Actually the shopping was the side-effect of a tour.

Last week my husband, sons and I enjoyed a short holiday in Firenze, enchanting old city in the centre of Italy, overflowing with masterpieces of art, with amazing shops too! Just to mention bags, one I liked had a little price-tag and I got close to see it: oh mamma mia! It had one more zero on its price than what I thought would have been expensive! I'm also impressed by the high number of shops selling leather gloves, that's not so common to find elsewhere. The city was not so crowed despite the period but you can bump into people from everywhere in the world! People at the reception and in restaurants kept on asking things in English and I can tell you they sighed with relief when we said them 'please you may speak in Italian'! Lol! I've heard some youngest Americans chatting in groups and they were absolutely incomprehensible to me! Sigh! Confronting and dealing with a second language like me as an adult, it's really difficult. But I'd even say that sometimes I must ask my sons to repeat what they're saying, they speak so fast... Deafness symptom?

Not my usual post, sorry there isn't new tatting to show. I've had a stiff neck for days, I'm definitely too young to call it cervical arthritis, and I'm confident that calling it simply "stiff neck", tomorrow or the day after, I feel good. That said, I can't do chores and I can't stay up late tatting and even if now I've got abundant dmc Special Dentelles size 80 white and green, I'm still at half of round 15 of WIOSNA2016 (designed by Renulek).

Now to the second pain... I fulfil many italian stereotypes, but not the "cooking mama" - but I have to cook. This morning I opted to put in the oven courgettes and aubergines, I simply slice them up and put in a baking tray, when they're cooked I flavour with salt, oil, sometimes capers, sometimes fresh basil. I bet you already guessed: I cut myself - in a point of my right thumb that is perfectly centered by the thread during each back and forth movement done by the shuttle (slip and slide way -- thank you for the pdf Mrs Jane!). Of course, a bloody cut is incompatible with B5200 bright white.

Plan B for the afternoon: test tatting a doodle from my notebook, 

... with a dark green thread, stain-resistant. I started and the pattern's working, but that cut insisted that I had to change hobby. So I took out the sewing machine and produced a little shoulder bag, to replace my old one.

Just few last words, not all my afternoons are so fun, the stiff neck won't last long.

When I post again, it will be August, already.

I'm really happy with WIOSNA2016, what a lovely and relaxing pattern, thank you very much Renulek! I understood that there will be at least 2 more rounds (round 15 has been already posted in her blog). I finished round 14 and also finished all 3 little balls of dmc size 80 thread, I've only an armful of each colour. So I "had" to do shopping, I'm waiting for the postman with the thread and I'm already distracted thinking about that feared moment: "what to do next?"

I've mentioned that I received as a gift the last issue of Mani di Fata - "Il Lavoro Chiacchierino #19"-. There are some lovely doilies and one captured my curiosity because it starts with a little squared motif with block tatting, already seen in a previous pubblication. The square is surrounded by a tatted frame, with block tatting, too, then many squares are tatted around in a rectangular shape and everything is finished with a lovely matching edging. Actually, just before lunch, I was determined to tat it!

I'm sure, that was not due to my indigestion, nor to the hot weather. I started after lunch trying to understand the pattern, only text, and spent over an hour on it. I earned a big headache, lots of jottings and some text still to be read. I thought I knew a little about tatting - and Italian, sigh! - but I can say that reading our dear old Aunt Priscilla was way too easier than this, or even that old German book by Tina Frauberger (Schiffchenspitze 1921)!! Mother tongue? I supposed being Italian...

That's not relaxing tatting, I can't spend an hour only to read a pattern, that is what can lead a lovely and enjoyable lace art to the oblivion. I had my drawing eventually, at least for the edging. With a modern textual notation it looks very easy. But - my dear tatters, I know when throwing in the towel!

Puff! Disappeared! An entire ball of DMC Special Dentelles size 80 yellow (colour 744)!

Ok, I know they are very high quality but low quantity: they are only 5gr. balls. DMC says they are 90 m. of thread, I trust them, never measured! I can wind my tiny shuttles 3 times (full capacity) with one ball.  Also, I almost finished the white B5200. The 13th row is all green then! (colour 471)!

It may be useful to know, that dmc has 3 hues for the white, my favourite is B5200, the bright white.

That's just a joke: I posted a pic in my FB page of some squares made with a sugar paste (I used a silicone mold), it's the so called "sweet lace" - also in Italian -, and I found a mold that looks like a tatted square! Who commented laughed a lot, and I did the same, even someone asked for a pattern!

So, why not? Just to have fun, I drew a square, then tatted it with white dmc size 70, and it's almost like the sugar! 

Oh, Sugar, Sugar! It's been since Tuesday that I've in mind that melody and can't help myself, I have to whistle!

Here you are the sugar squares to be compared with it. Truth be told, I don't think that my tatting came out like the mold... especially because one took so long to be ready (about 2 hours), while the sugar paste was very collaborative and I had 24 in one hour!!

The centre is a round of little rings 3-3. I used a pin as an helper, I did the same in the tricky flower in the centre of Renulek's WIOSNA2016. Last ring was a split ring.

That let me climb to the next round with another SR. This is the second round finished:

... I almost forget to show you a gift just received from one of my beloved aunts:

Mani di Fata - "Il Lavoro Chiacchierino #19". There's their usual traditional tatting (a tablecloth, a dozen white doilies, also attached to linen) but this time they put free-form tatting (there's a lovely picture with 2 birds on a branch) and separate written instructions for needle-tatters. Very few schematics (visual patterns) but that's good, they used to have only written instruction. Just as curiosity, one rectangular doily has squared motifs that are the same found in another old pubblication I got, there used as edging's corner, here arranged in a beautiful way, I'll tell you more about it!
